Collegiate wrestling
International Disciplines
Wrestling disciplines difined by FILA are broken into two categories; International wrestling disciplines and Flok wrestling disciplines. According to the International ferderation of Associated Wrestling styles, there are five curent International wrestling disciplines ackmowledged throughout the world. They are Greco-Roman Wrestling, Freestyle Wrestling, Grapling Beach wrestling and Sambo.
- Greco-Roman is an international discipline and an olympic sport. In greco style, it is forbidden to hold the opponent below the belt, to make trips, and to actively use the legs in the excecution of any action. Recent rule changes in greco increase opportunities for and place greater emphasis on explosive, high altitude throws.
- Freestyle is also an olympic sport. in freestyle, it is allowed to hold the legs of the opponent, to make trips and to actively use legs.
- Grappling is a wrestling style also called submission wrestling or "submission grappling" which consists of controlling the opponent without using striking, in standing position or on the ground after a throw, and to make him or her abandon thanks to immobilization techniques such as locks. Grappling plays an important role in the practice of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and can be used as a self defense technique. It brings together techniques from Freestyle wrestling Greco-Roman, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Folk american wrestling, sambe and judo.
- Beach wrestling is standing wrestling done by wrestlers, male or female, inside a sand-filled circle measuring 6 meter in diametes. There are only two weight categories, heavy and light. The objective is to throw your opponent or take your opponent to his or her back. The wrestlers wear swimsuits rather then than special wrestling uniforms.
- Sambo is a martial art that originated in the Soviet union in the 20th century. It is a self-defense without weapons. The rules for sport sambo are similar to those allowed in competitive judo, with a variety of leglocks and defense holds from the various national wrestling styles in the Soviet Union, while not allowing chockeholds.
Stereo types of wrestling
The stereo type of my community would be as a competitive sport. I say competitive sport because there is always someone trying to be better then someone else, and at every tournament there are medals for those who come in the top 3 placers (meaning the best at the tournament). Also it would be considered as a family, because the team is together traveling, winning or losing, and going through all the ups and down for 6 months. So you basically live with the team.
Dieting for wrestling
When someone thinks of diet, they think of loosing weight or eating right so they can feel better or just to look good. For wrestlers dieting is how they survive. They either diet to gain or loose weight.A reason for this is because they want to succeed in a certain weight class. for example; if a wrestler weights 128 pounds he could either wrestle 125lbs or 130lbs, but I he wants to; he could also drop weight to wrestle 119lbs or even 112lbs. this is not healthy if you don’t have much fat to loose, but it’s the choice that a lot of wrestlers tend to make. They think that by going a weight class lower they can beat the opponent quicker, and win more. The healthy and right thing to do is to not loose more then 5 to 6 pounds. It is better to eat right so you can have energy. Do not eat as many fats and crabs. Eat fruit, vegetables, lots of fluids (pop and energy drinks are very bad) and to stay fit. This way you are the healthy one, have energy, and strength to earn that win.
The sacrifice of wrestling
For an athlete wrestling is not just a sport, it’s a life style. If they are really into the sport they will go through a lot of sacrifices, pain, and glory. If they’re just there for fun then they do not have what it takes to succeed in the sport and be somebody on the mat.
The sacrifices happen because they set goals for each to accomplish. So for this they need to discipline themselves. Even if they need their style of doing things. They need to stay in shape all year long. By staning in shape I'm talking about working out, runing every night, going to summer practices nomatter what, and to push yourself to the limit.
Wrestlers commit themselves into traveling almost every weekend for tournaments, intensive or technical camps. The sacrifice in that is that you miss a family member’s birthday, you don’t get to spend much time with the girlfriend, or all the parties missed. But in the end it’s all worth it, because the feeling of coming home with a first place medal is greater than being at a party.
Where did wrestling originate from?
Wrestling originated in 708 BC when the first Olympic wrestling occurred. It originated in Rome and spread through the world including India, China, and through out the Middle East. There are hundreds of styles of wrestling world wide today,
with many nations having indigenous forms. Among these are GlĂma wrestling in Iceland, Schwingen wrestling in Switzerland, and Cumberland wrestling in Britain. But there are four main forms of amateur competitive wrestling practiced internationally today: Greco-Roman wrestling, freestyle wrestling, judo wrestling and sombo wrestling. Judo is considered a separate sport at the Olympics. Sombo is a combination of freestyle and judo and is most popular in the republics of the former Soviet Union, but it has not yet been contested in the Olympics. Freestyle wrestling is similar to American collegiate style, or folkstyle wrestling. Holds are relatively unlimited, provided they are not dangerous, and can be applied to any part of the body. Greco-Roman wrestling limits holds to the upper body.

Gibraltar: School bus driver gets honored for years on the job.
Martha Smith is the thirty year veteran bus driver that has put quite some time and miles into her job. She knew that a bus driver was going to be recognized by the board of education, but did not know who it was for. Her aide had said to Smith that the recognition was for her, because that is what she had heard. The recognizing was indeed for her. Even though she has a son and a daughter, she is said that she treats the kids as her own kids. She likes to go the extra mile for the kids, for example; on the holidays she decorates, and gives away presents. Although most of the kids don't say thanks, she does not mind because it comes from the heart. AAlthough she is sixty-something years old and insist that "the number does not get more specific than that"; she does not plan on retiring just yet.
